Spiritual Surrender
After breaking off her engagement, a friend came over to process her feelings from the comfort of my oversized coach. We broached the topic of surrender, and at some point these words emerged:
“surrender isn’t giving up, it’s giving up control”
It struck us both, I wrote it down, and voila - the poem was born.
Spiritual Surrender
Misconceptions abound
around spiritual surrender
Of these mistakes
I’ve been an offender
The pendulum swings from
white-knuckle grip
to “Jesus take the wheel!”
Somewhere in the middle, I feel,
is where our faith is real
Surrender is not giving up -
it’s giving up control
Playing our part
and allowing destiny her role
It’s not relinquishing our power -
it’s relinquishing our pride
Because from the Divine forces of nature
Honey, we can’t hide
Surrender is not passivity -
it’s infusing activity
with a sense of serenity
that, regardless of outcome,
. you’re on the right track
To quote Gabby B,
“The universe has your back”
So don’t stop fighting for your dreams -
stop conniving little schemes
to outsmart what is
You don’t always know best
so learn from the tests
and trust your inner knowing
when it’s sourced from the Heavens
Let go, and let God
as you follow faith’s directions
POWER MOVE: Think of an area of your life where either:
You feel you are being too passive (i.e. allowing yourself to “surrender” to the point that you’re not taking action). You may say things like, “if it’s meant to be it will just happen.”
OR
You feel you are trying too hard to control things. You may be thinking that you can do everything yourself and with enough hard work, you’ll get there.
See if there’s any room to invite in the other element.
If you’re being too passive, what’s an action step you can take to work with the universe to create your dreams?
If you feel you’re trying extremely hard but not getting what you want, how can you relinquish control a bit and trust the natural flow of life?
This is a delicate balance that I believe takes a lifetime to strike. So be patient with yourself in the process, and use this as an experiment to gauge your own tendencies.
