For me, birthdays have always been a mixed experience. I always looked forward to it, creating wildly unrealistic expectations for how the day would turn out. Then, inevitably, I would end up crying in disappointment (okay, not every year, but a lot of the time!). As an adult, birthdays have a different meaning, as they represent a chance for us to reflect and recalibrate for the year ahead.
